Policies and Procedures
Next to the Bible, the Policy and
Procedure Manual is the most important book in
giving direction to the board and to the administration on the
operation of the school. Written policies can prevent chaos,
confusion, and legal problems. Policies provide less chance that
the administrator will make an illogical, irrational, or possibly
even illegal decision that can be considered as "policy
setting" and jeopardize the board. Such decisions may
disrupt employee relations, undermine board harmony, and run
afoul of government and board regulations. Also for continued
board cohesiveness, all policies should always be unanimously
agreed upon.
Finally, while avoiding lawsuits is one good reason to establish coherent policy, another reason, which is just as important, is that clear policies enable administrators to act decisively, rather that hesitantly. Protect yourselves from "dangers, toils, and snares".
