TURTLE TRIVIA: Did you know that New York State was one of the earliest
governments to enact protective legislation on turtles? The Forest, Fish and Game Law of
1905 contained the following statement: "...taking, killing or exposing for sale all
land turtles or tortoises, including the box and wood turtle, is hereby prohibited."
Today, Box (Terrapene sp) and Wood Turtles (Clemmys insculpta) cannot be
collected, posessed, imported, killed or sold without a permit. The Bog Turtle (Clemmys
muhlenbergii) was added in 1966 and was the FIRST reptile to be included on the New
York State Endangered Species list in 1974.
