MegaMath
from Los Alamos National Laboratories
The MegaMath project is intended to bring unusual and important mathematical
ideas to elementary school classrooms so that young people and their teachers can think
about them together. MegaMath is the work of many people : classroom teachers,
mathematicians, students in education and computer science, elementary school and high
school students, school administrators, computer scientists, and parents. MegaMath is a
project of the Computer Research and Applications Group at Los Alamos National Laboratory.
Lesson Ideas from Teachers'
Edition
Each lesson plan at this site is designed to quickly aid the teacher in
determining the appropriate grade level, the lesson objective, resources needed, teacher
preparation, procedure, variations, and options. A busy teacher can quickly pick up some
great lessons.
CHANCE Database Lesson
Plans
This data base contains materials designed help teach a Chance course or a
more standard introductory probability or statistics course. The Chance course is a case
study quantitative literacy course developed cooperatively by Middlebury, Grinnell,
Spelman, University of California San Diego, University of Minnesota, and Dartmouth. The
aim of Chance is to make students more informed, and critical, readers of current news
that uses probability and statistics as reported in daily newspapers such as "The New
York Times" and current journals and magazines such as "Chance",
"Science", "Nature", and the "New England Journal of
Medicine". Some of our documents are available in Adobe Acrobat's Portable Document
Format. To read these documents you will have to download Free Adobe Reader, which is
easily downloaded from this web site.
The Regional
Alliance for Mathematics and Science Education Reform
Math teachers who want to stay current with trends in math and science
education need to visit this site. There are a lot of excellent resources and links to
other sites.
Connected Geometry
Connected Geometry is curriculum development project, funded by the National
Science Foundation, designed to help teachers and students engage in meaningful
mathematical activity by offering students a chance to understand and appreciate the
connections and unifying themes within mathematics, and to build on the connections
between students' backgrounds and mathematics.
Secondary Mathematics
Assessment and Resource Database
This Australian site is worth investigating. SMARD provides an opportunity
for secondary math teachers to share quality assessment and resources. Much of the
assessment is alternative assessment, known as 'authentic assessment' in the US. You are
invited to browse through their collection, select what you want and take it away.
OASIS (Online
Activities for Standards in School)
Online Activities for Standards in School is a project of the Colorado
Alliance for Science Program. This is a very important site for math teachers. OASIS is a
system for locating standards-based Internet science and math curriculum materials and
resources that are useful to teachers and students. While there is a great deal of
Internet material already available, it is not always obvious how the activities or
materials fit into a standards-based classroom. By linking the Colorado State Science and
Math Standards with various activities we hope to simplify the task of integrating
Internet resources into the classroom. ( National standards for science education are also
available on line)
The Math Forum
The Math Forum is another winner for the math teacher. Definitely bookmark
this site because you will want to come back many times. Key issues in math, math
education, math resources by subject, and a math activity of the month all contribute to
make this an outstanding web site for math teachers.
Educational Standards and
Curriculum Frameworks for Math
Developing Educational Standards is an annotated list of Internet sites with
K-12 educational standards and curriculum frameworks documents, maintained by Charles Hill
and the Putnam Valley Schools in New York. Listing by subject and listing by State provide
the math teacher with comprehensive standards for math. These listings are all hypertext
linked, so there is plenty of comparative resources available.
Promising Practices in
Mathematics and Science Education-1995
Promising Practices in Mathematics and Science Education-1995 is a collection
of promising educational programs and practices from the Eisenhower Regional Consortia.
This web site of promising practices in mathematics and science education provides an
array of innovative ideas which should be of interest to teachers at the elementary,
secondary, and pre-service levels of education. Fifty models of programs and practices
were selected and can be used to improve teaching and learning in mathematics and science
education.
The Cornell Theory
Center Math and Science Gateway
The Cornell Theory Center Math and Science Gateway provides links to
resources in mathematics and science for educators and students in grades 9-12. We have
bookmarked the root directory so you can go to all the areas. The mathematics section is
alone very enticing.
ALCOM K-12 Education
Outreach Program
The NSF Center for Advanced Liquid Crystalline Optical Materials (ALCOM) has
developed a K-12 Internet site where visitors can access the ALCOM Newsletter, view lesson
plans, pose queries to Ask A Scientist and or make use of search engines.
Explorer Home Page
The Explorer is a collection of educational resources (instructional
software, lab activities, lesson plans ...) for K-12 mathematics and science education.
Many resources are available in the Adobe Acrobat format that is readable by Macintosh,
Windows and other OSs. The Explorer is being developed jointly by the Great Lakes
Collaborative and the University of Kansas UNITE group to involve educators and students
in creating and using multimedia resources for active learning and "on time"
delivery.
MathMol Modules
Concepts of both science and mathematics through molecular modeling are the emphasis
of this site, which includes information, illustrations, activities, and downloadable
files.
The AIMS Puzzle Corner
Though this is not a lesson plan site, it is included here because as
teachers, we all want our students to be involved in learning and to enjoy that learning.
Puzzles are highly motivational tools that capture the imaginations of students. To
infiltrate the classroom with a vibrant brand of problem solving, AIMS offers a
tantalizing educational bait-and-hook in the form of a new puzzle each month.
K-12 Statistics Education
Here is a list of resources in statistics including lessons and useful data
sets. The links are organized to follow the NCTM Statistics Standards for grades 9-12
These goals can be found on page 167 of the NCTM Standards.
Math Problem
Solving
This site invites students to use creative strategies to solve story
questions. Students choose one of the problems to solve and work on it for awhile. When
they feel that they have solved the problem, they send in the proof.
Appetizers and Lessons for
Math and Reason
This site is actually two online classrooms for math and logic. This web site
offers appetizers and lessons in both subjects. If one is not to your liking, try another.
Each one is different --- from each other and perhaps from other lessons in math and logic
which you may have seen. The mathematics appetizers further offer arithmetic review
problems, three skills for algebra -- a must for the mathematically shy or curious,
painless theorem proving, complex numbers, why slopes (a little calculus), and more.
Opinions on learning and teaching are offered as well.
Internet Center for
Mathematics Problems
In the author's words: "On this page, we try to identify and list all
sources of mathematics problems on the Internet and relastd information."
Untangling the
Mathematics of Knot
I almost overlooked this interesting site. Knots have been studied
extensively by mathematicians for the last hundred years. Recently the study of knots has
proved to be of great interest to theoretical physicists and molecular biologists. One of
the most peculiar things which emerges as you study knots is how a category of objects as
simple as a knot could be so rich in profound mathematical connections.
Number Theory Web
This is a mirrored site from Australia. Number Theory Web is an attempt to
use the resources of the World Wide Web to collect and disseminate information of interest
to number theorists everywhere and to facilitate communication between number theorists.
Eric's Treasure Trove
of Mathematics
If you teach math, then you will want to bookmark this site. There are no
lesson plans here, but a real treasure of mathematical resources for planning lessons.
Math Gopher Lesson Plan Sites
Big
Sky Telegraph Math Lesson Plans
This math gopher site has lesson plans for elementary, intermediate, and high
school teachers. "Using M&M Cookies To Work Math Problems" is an example of
the lessons found at this site. It is always more visually interesting to visit a world
wide web site, but don't overlook the great things that are found at gopher sites.
Math Collection at Rice
University
Many math lessons are found at gopher sites and this is an example of good
math gopher site. The growth of the World Wide Web has dramatically influenced
universities maintaining their gopher sites. This is a very, very large collection of
interest to math teachers. Rice University no longer maintains this gopher collection and
recommends searching for WWW sites. We feel that some of the resources found here will
never make it to an appropriate WWW page and, therefore have chosen to include this site
for math teachers who want to dig a little deeper into their subject matter.
AskERIC Math Lesson
Plans
This is the "motherlode" of the ERIC collection for mathematics. A
math teacher could spend hours here and gather enough lesson plan ideas for the entire
year! Manipulatives, pre-algebra, calculator, place value---think of any math "buzz
word" and there is bound to be a lesson plan at this huge site.
AskERIC New
Lessons/Math
This is an additional ERIC math lesson plan collection. 16 lesson plans are
evenly divided across the grade levels.

STEMnet
Primary Math Lessons
There are three math lessons at this site for primary teachers. "A Day
Full of Popcorn" is a fun lesson to consider: for one day all activities will center
around popcorn as a teaching "tool."
National
Student Research Center
This gopher site is dedicated to promoting student research and the use of
the scientific method in all subject areas across the curriculum.
